Supportive Services
The Supportive Services Division consists of programs and services offered by CSP to assist families and individuals within CSP’s 10-county service area by eliminating barriers to self-sufficiency.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels delivers a midday meal to people who are homebound and/or unable to prepare meals for themselves. Meals on Wheels is a volunteer-based program (partially funded by the City of Tuscaloosa, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP), and donations) that provides dignity, companionship and a sense of security for recipients, their families and caregivers. This program is administered in collaboration with area churches that assume responsibility for the program on weekends.
Utility Assistance Programs
CSP employs several programs to assist families with high energy bills. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Alabama Business Charitable (ABC) Trust Fund, Emergency Food & Shelter (EFSP), Project SHARE, and Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program(LIWAP) assist specifically with utility bill payments. For income eligible clients, payments are made by CSP directly to the utility company on the client's behalf.
Information & Referrals
Through information and referrals, CSP connects families with services and resources that aid in household stability and the goal of self-sufficiency. CSP provides information and referrals to households that need services which may or may not be provided by CSP. Through information and referrals, CSP assists approximately 15,000 households.
Case Management
CSP’s case management service is a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation, care coordination, evaluation and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual’s and family’s comprehensive needs through communication and available resources to promote self-sufficiency.
Diaper Distribution Program
The Diaper Distribution Demonstration and Research Pilot (DDDRP) is the first federal program focused on diaper distribution, launched by the Office of Community Services in 2022. It provides funding to expand diaper distribution for low-income families through community partners like social service agencies and diaper banks. In addition to diapers, families receive access to vital support services, such as job training and educational resources. The pilot aims to reduce financial stress, improve child health, and boost caregivers’ workforce participation by ensuring families have a reliable supply of diapers.
